Renting an apartment means you cannot drill into walls, hang permanent fixtures, or make structural changes. But that does not mean you are stuck with noise. There is a range of effective, removable soundproofing solutions that work well without violating your lease.
The Renter’s Core Challenge
Most high-performance soundproofing requires either adding mass permanently to walls and ceilings or decoupling structural elements — both of which involve construction. As a renter, your strategy must focus on portable, adhesive-free, or lightweight solutions that you can remove when you leave.
1. Heavy Curtains and Curtain Rods
Command hook curtain rods and over-door rods let you hang heavy curtains anywhere without drilling. Choose curtains made from thick woven fabric — triple-weave blackout curtains are the best option. Hang them floor to ceiling and extend the rod at least 6 inches past the window frame on each side to minimize gaps. These reduce both sound transmission through windows and sound reflection inside the room.
2. Removable Acoustic Panels
Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels can be mounted with heavy-duty removable adhesive strips. Choose panels with a core of rigid mineral wool or fiberglass — not foam. These absorb mid and high-frequency sound effectively and can meaningfully reduce echo and reflected noise in a room. Position them at ear height on walls where sound enters most directly.
The limitation: acoustic panels absorb sound inside the room. They do not block sound from entering. For echo and harshness in a home office or bedroom, they make a real difference.
3. Door Sealing Kits
Self-adhesive door sweeps and foam weatherstripping are completely removable and make a significant difference in blocking noise from corridors and adjacent apartments. Install a rubber door sweep at the bottom of your door and foam tape around the three remaining sides of the door frame. When you leave, peel them off and patch any minor marks with white filler.
4. Bookshelf Walls
Large bookshelves — especially KALLAX-style cube units from IKEA — placed against shared walls add mass without touching the wall permanently. Fill them with books, which are dense and effective at absorbing sound. A fully loaded bookshelf against a shared wall can reduce noise noticeably, particularly for mid-frequency conversation and television sound.
5. Moving Blankets and MLV Panels
Heavy moving blankets hung over doors or suspended from over-door rods provide significant mass addition at low cost. They are not attractive but are highly effective in sleeping rooms or home offices where appearance is less important. Mass Loaded Vinyl panels can be cut to size and hung the same way for a more refined result.
6. White Noise Machines
A quality white noise machine on your bedside table does not reduce noise — it masks it. By raising the ambient sound level of your room consistently, it makes individual noise intrusions from neighbors less jarring. For sleep disruption caused by sporadic sounds, this is often the most practical and immediate solution available to renters.
7. Draft Excluders and Door Snakes
Fabric draft excluders placed at the bottom of doors are completely non-invasive and close the gap under the door that transmits a large amount of corridor noise. They are inexpensive, removable, and effective for light to moderate noise levels.
Combining Methods for Best Results
No single method will transform a noisy apartment into a quiet one. The most effective approach is to combine several of these methods: seal gaps first, add mass at key entry points, introduce absorption inside the room, and use white noise to manage what remains. This layered approach delivers cumulative improvements that make a real difference in daily comfort.
